Proposal for St. Mary's

“Standing on Fortunes to See the Future” is a new public art proposal for the Chinese Cultural Center. This Sculpture by the artist Curtis Wallin will combine the ideas from the everyday with that of science, nature and mythology.
The body of this sculpture, a wave, will be built from 64 giant Kau cim sticks on an eleven-foot circular base. These 64 Chinese Fortune sticks woven into a nest-like form will spiral up as a helix from the base and transform into a wave. This dynamic form suggests the combined power of these natural structures with the fortunes. Guan Yu, for whom the Kong Chow Temple is dedicated, is the silhouetted figure riding atop the crest of the wave, twelve feet in the air, looking to the future riding the wave of fortune.
