I choose to make of this an affirmation of my rights. As an Asian woman artist submitting to this call for artists signify that I engaged into the visibility of my work, the authority to express myself and the possibility to participate in the show this fall. I like to draw the analogy to the right of vote. By acting upon your rights one become part of a bigger whole putting away “abstention, invisibility and impossibility”.
I depicted a series of a reoccurring theme that I have drawn throughout my artistic trajectory. It is a series that explore the intrinsic value of a still life object depicted through different techniques. At the beginning, I was very much influenced with photo-realism trying to transfer an impression directly into two dimensional media minimizing my intervention. Later, I was interested to explore the same subject and see how well I could master a traditional Asian lacquer technique to get similar results.
In conclusion, my path in this bigger whole is to continue evolving, finding aesthetics in simple things. It is the eye of the beholder to capture a moment in time of what the “genre”, “gender” or “category” of WE, WOMEN represent in the 21st century.
I look forward in this competition to explore my interest in the Chinese Cultural expression towards modern themes. I appreciate this opportunity to submit my statement.
