A Chinese Culture Foundation of San Francisco Program 舊金山中華文化基金会項目

There is an old saying in China: When a person isolates from the mainstream society, they become an island. Isolation enables clear reflection. Here in America, I find myself both figuratively and literally on that island. I live on Treasure Island, an island between San Francisco and Oakland. The island both reflects and inspires my art.
In my recent series, I utilize the silkscreen techniques to express my experiences of living abroad. I have been exposed to unfamiliar language, culture, and modes of thinking. These situations are difficult but it challenges me to examine my life and artistic production. This exploration has led me to combine the figure and landscape as a way of expressing how place can define an individual. The combination of figure and landscape expresses the emotion of the individual relating to circumstance.
