The Artadia Award is unique, providing substantial financial support, critical validation and broader public exposure for artists across the country:

* Cash awards are granted in participating cities on a rotating basis.

* Awards ranging from $15,000 to $3,000 are unrestricted, and can be used however the artist sees fit.

* Applications are open to all visual artists who reside in Artadia's participating cities.

* A two-tiered selection process combines local expertise with outside perspectives from leading national and international curators and artists.

* Visiting panelists engage with local artists in their studios, gaining a broader context for their work and facilitating long-lasting relationships.

* A preliminary panel of prominent national and local curators and artists evaluates all the submissions and selects 15 finalists.

* A second panel of curators and artists travels to the participating city and conducts studio visits with each of the finalists. This panel selects the artists who receive Artadia Awards. However used, the Artadia Award is the monetary component of a wider culture of support.

Participating cities with active awards programs are currently:

* Atlanta, metropolitan area

* Boston, metropolitan area

* Chicago, Cook County

* Houston, Harris County

* San Francisco Bay Area

Participating cities will be added strategically to the Artadia network by focusing on regions that demonstrate a commitment to contemporary art. These cities are notable for:

* The active presence of local artists in the community.

* Art institutions recognized for innovative contemporary programming.

* Exemplary schools that prepare artists through undergraduate and graduate programs.

eligibility & guidelines

The Artadia Awards application process is open to all visual artists who:

* Live and work in designated partner cities.

* Have resided in the program city for at least one year prior to the application deadline.

* Are not currently enrolled in an art-related college or university degree program, nor planning to attend an art-related college or university degree program in the coming year.

* Are not related to Artadia staff or directors in any way.

* Have not received an Artadia (formerly The ArtCouncil Inc.) Award for $10,000 or more in the past.

Conflict of Interest Policy: Artadia requires jurors to disclose any potential conflicts of interests. If a personal relationship exists between a juror and an applicant, which may compromise the ability of the juror to act as neutral evaluator, the juror is required to leave the room during jury deliberations and abstain from voting for that applicant.

About the Application

The Artadia Awards online application includes an applicant profile section, an area to submit a C.V. (curriculum vitae/artist resumé), artist’s statement and eight (8) images of artwork and/or details; or Video/Media/Sound. Time-based media submissions may be sent by mail in addition to, or in lieu of the 8 digital images submitted online. The jury will review up to 5 minutes of the submitted Video/Media/Sound. About the Jury Process

Artadia convenes nationally recognized panels of jurors from around the country for two rounds. In the first round a jury of three reviews applications and determines a shortlist of 15 finalists for the Artadia Awards. The second jury of three then meets with the shortlisted Finalists in studio visits, each 45 minutes-long after which 7 Awardees are announced (2 awards of $15,000 and 5 at $3,000). Application

All visual artists living and working in the 5-county San Francisco Bay Area are strongly encouraged to apply. Awards will be selected in the fall of 2009 through Artadia's two-tiered jury process. This is Artadia's seventh awards cycle in the San Francisco Bay Area. The five elegible Bay Area-counties are: Alameda, Contra-Costa, Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo.

The application deadline is October 15, 2009, 11:59 PM PST.

Review process and notification

Artadia convenes nationally recognized panels of jurors from around the country for two rounds. In the first round a jury of three reviews applications and determines a short-list of 15 finalists for the Artadia Awards to be announced in October 2009. All applicants will be informed of the results by email.

The second jury of three then meets with the short-listed Finalists for studio visits in San Francisco in November, each 45 minutes long, after which seven Artadia Awardees (2 awards at $15,000 and 5 at $3,000) are announced in December 2009. Please note that finalists are required to be phyiscally present for the studio visits in November. Public programs with the Awardees will follow in 2010. FAQs

How do I apply?
Awards applications are only available online during specified application periods (see deadlines). During open awards periods, applications can be completed via the Artadia website.

Which U.S. cities are Artadia participating cities, and why?
Artadia operates in cities that have demonstrated a commitment to the arts through the strength of their art schools and institutions, and by the active community involvement of local artists. Artadia currently operates in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, and the San Francisco/Bay Area, and will expand to other cities across the United States in the years to come.

What work should I submit?
Previous jurors have recommended that artists submit work that has been created within the past three years. Though you may submit more than one slide of the same artwork, we recommend that you provide a representative sample of the breadth of your creative work.

If I've applied before, do I need to register with Artadia's online application?
Only applicants who have applied previously to Artadia via the online e-grant application will already have a login and password. All new applicants to Artadia, and those who have applied in the past with our paper only application must create a log in for the e-grant/cuerate online application.

How will I know if my application was received?
Artadia will acknowledge receipt of your application with a confirmation email, once your digital application is completed and submitted.

Does Artadia give project-based awards?
No. Artadia's awards are unrestricted. Artists may use the grant however they please. Selections are based upon the merit of past work.

Are Artadia awards only for emerging artists?
No. Visual artists at all stages of their careers may apply.

May I submit publications and promotional material as supporting documentation?
No. Due to the number of applications that we receive we can only review your online application, DVD/CDs and/or VHS tapes.

Can collaborative teams apply for this award?
Collaboratives are welcome to apply with a single application. One person from the collaborative should be listed as the contact person for that application. Please use last name field to enter in the name of the collaborative on the application. In the address field, please enter "c/o contact name" before street address. If you are both a member of a collective and an individual artist, you may only apply once per awards cycle.

Are video/sound artists eligible for the Artadia Award?
Yes, the panel will consider applications by video/sound artists who create works for the gallery/museum context. Up to 5 minutes of work on DVD/CD or VHS will be reviewed. Feature length commercial films and documentaries, music videos, and commercial music projects are not eligible.

Are filmmakers eligible for the Artadia Award?
Artadia does not fund feature length documentary or commercial film projects.

How will the panel review my images?
All eight images will be viewed in sets of four. The panel will first see the images labeled 1-4, then 5-8. Up to 5 minutes of video work will be viewed.

Where do I send my media submissions?

Will Artadia return my video/media?
If you are not selected for an Artadia Award, Artadia will return video/media only if you include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your media submission. Artadia cannot be responsible for lost or damaged materials.

Are past ArtCouncil grant recipients eligible to apply for Artadia Awards?
Past ArtCouncil and Artadia grant recipients who have received awards of less than $10,000 may reapply.

If I am NOT selected, may I reapply in future rounds?
Yes, artists are encouraged to reapply in subsequent Artadia awards cycles, which occur bi-annually in Artadia program cities.

Does Artadia purchase art?
No, we are not a collecting institution.
