Biography

Manli Chao was born in Taiwan and moved to the United States in 1985. She began her fine arts education at the Queens College and New York Studio School in New York from 1985 to 1987. She continued her ufine arts studies at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco after 1988. Manli obtained her Master of Fine Arts degree from the Academy of Art Univeristy in 2001.

While living in the multi-cultural San Francisco Bay Area, Manli was strongly encouraged by the people and the environment to develop creatively. Manli seized the opportunity and has developed her artistic voice and her style as a painter during the past twenty years.

Manli’s work demonstrates the use of a lyrical, rhythmical, curvature of forms, not quite geometric, sometimes amorphic, but always in the process of melding. Her work has an organic quality that, while interesting in her use of color and composition, gives small clue to the viewer about her intent. Subdued color variations are a hallmark of her color choices.

Manli displays a greater willingness to model shapes and forms and to manipulate their surfaces aided by building layers of paint. The zigzag bands, the vertical or the oblique, stride forward empowering and binding the composition together; they activate the foreground by placement and the middle and background through contrasts.

When talking about her work, Manli tells us that when it comes to recognizing the potential of what our five senses allow us to experience, she feels that at any given time, we generally experience a few percent of the full range of feelings, “the tip of the iceberg”, as she puts it.

The paintings of Manli are a portal to what lies below the surface, “a glimpse of the iceberg in its entirety”, an opportunity to examine the full range of our senses through a visual experience.
